The title Dark Light is a classic example of the Gothic band HIM's very own brand of Love Metal. With Gothic bands such as The Cure, upbeat songs can contain morbid lyrics without contradiction and this album demonstrates that concept with titles such as Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly and Killing Loneliness. For those new to Gothic music, I would compare the joy I get from listening to this album with reading a poem by Shelley or watching a Tim Burton film, ie there is beauty within the sadness. Although I like this album very much, I do not class it as excellent, simply because the early tracks are stonger than the later ones. However, based on what they've released so far, I think this band will become one of the all time greats. There is a lot of meaning in Valo's songs, while the clean lyrics enable the band to appeal to a wide audience. The music is technically and melodically superb - I can't see how or why anyone could find it offensive. I bought this album after And Love Said No expecting it to be harder; but, this is a touch lighter. If you'd like it harder, try the next album - Venus Doom.Read full review
I bought this CD a week before going to see HIM in concert, I learnt every word to every song and was not disappointed when with Ville's amazing lyrics. This has got to be there best album to date, keeping the same 'light metal' sound each song is better then the last, I can hardly choose my favourite!
I love HIM but this CD was a bit disappointing - different production, and it showed. Lead singer Ville's voice was not as prominent and there seemed to be a bit much overdubbing. No powerful or memorable tracks and all rather mediocre.
