Deering has always been known as a quality Banjo maker with good instruments at an affordable price. The Artisan models are like their regular models but with a little more nuance, like a dark fingerboard and darkly stained neck and pot and high quality tuning machines. The larger pot on the Americana makes for a little bit "thicker" sound, in a good way that fits with old timey, clawhammer music that I like. The frailing scoop is a bonus that I hope to explore but really never felt the need for it until I saw one (then I wanted it). The action is close without buzzing, but I haven't tried the railroad spikes yet for the g string. My only disappointment is that I bought a nice cradle strap to go along with it but the shoes and clamping pins are too close to the wood of the pot and won't allow for the strap to go in that space. Small price to pay. I spent more on this banjo than I wanted to spend on another instrument but to get an Americana Artisan at that price was a good deal. It's very pretty and makes me sound better than I am at playing.Read full review
