I bought this printer used from a title company, so it had quite a few sheets through the chute by the time that I got hold of it. I have to say, though, that this is quite the rugged and versatile machine. I plugged it into my usb hub and my PowerMac G4 (running OSX 10.4.11 "Tiger") recognized it immediately and, with a quick change in printer preferences, it printed out a perfect test page! It can be very thrifty with the toner if you fine-tune your settings, but it is also capable of some pretty impressive B&W graphics when needed. I haven't noticed any significant errant specks in the light sections or "banding" in the darker portions of the pages. While it's a bit slow to start up compared to an inkjet printer (about 20 seconds from the time it's switched-on or re-awakened), it really spits the pages out once it gets going. The replacement toner cartridges are quite readily available with some excellent deals on eBay, of all places! The only gripes are very minor ones. It is a noisy machine (compared to my HP Deskjet 935C) and it gives off a fair amount of heat - more than a very similar Lexmark model that I use at work (the Dell 1710 is made by Lexmark). The manual paper feed in this particular machine is a bit balky and has a tendency to jam, but I've gotten better at learning its quirks and haven't had so many jams recently. It has yet to jam from the regular paper-feed tray. Overall, I'm quite happy and am on the lookout for another for my wife!Read full review
This printer is one of the best printers for the home/small business. The Dell 1710 is a fairly inexpensive laser printer with a lot of features. Don't let the price fool you! Laser printers are cheaper to operate over time as compared to ink-jet printers. Laser printers are also more durable and will last forever. If you hook up the Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 (also available on e-bay), you will then have a 1710n (a networked printer). Configuration for the wireless set up is easy, and all computers on your network can EASILY print to the printer. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone interested in laser printing!
Easy to set up, runs very well. It was packaged very well. It surpassed what I expected from what I expected for a refurbished unit.
