Less sci - fi more history in this story, still enjoyable though. With all the features of the early productions from series 2. Another must for the hard core fan.

At last the long awaited Time Meddler comes to shiny DVD. This is the first time we meet another member of the Doctor's race, the meddling monk played by Peter Butterworth. The year is 1066 and with only a few weeks until the battle of Hastings, a mysterious monk is trying to change history by helping King Harold to win the battle of Hastings. The Doctor arrives (played by the first actor in the role William Hartnell) with Vicki and Steven and attempts to stop the monks meddling with History. Having been lost by the BBC in the 1970's, all 4 episodes of this story were recovered from Nigeria in the 1980's. Unlike other Black and White Dr Who episodes already on DVD, the TIME MEDDLER has not undergone the Vidfire process. However the episodes have been wonderfully cleaned up for this release, and are far better than the episodes that were released on VHS. Being a standard release the number of extras are limited compared to other DVDS in the special release range. What extras there are are pretty impressive, with a restoration featurette and a wonderful tribute to the very first producer of the show Verity Lambert, who sadly passed away late 2007. Having not even been born when the Time Meddler was broadcast, I was lucky to first see this story during its BBC 2 repeat in 1992. Over 15 years later it is great to be able to see it once again on DVD. For those who are fans of the big budget modern Doctor Who, the time meddler may seem a bit dated and slow paced compared to the slick fast paced 45 minute episodes of today. Don't let its age put you off. It an excellent well written and enjoyable story and the character of the monk is an ingenious idea, a character that is not actualy evil but one that comes across as rash and reckless and sometimes childlike, unaware of the damage that his meddling might cause. Fan of the classic series will no doubt already have this in their DVD collection, but for those who don't, go out and buy it, you may find yourself actually enjoying 4 episodes of historical fun.Read full review
