I Bought this after seeing the Duke on the performance Channel. This albumn did not dissapoint me after my impulse purchase in anyway. The approach to the art of the songsmith here is unusual if not unique and the the cover price is worthwhile just for the track "Last night I nearly Died". I'll admit it's not a blokes thing, so I gave this to my wife telling her is was a present, she love'd it. No it's a win - win as I can listen to it too without having to admit I have a gay side!
I first saw him when he supported The Divine Comedy and thought he was superbly talented. This album highlights the same material and it is both unique, clever, melodic an inspiring. He soonafter took 'Later With Jools Holland' by storm and was voted the best act of the night on an online poll. He played 'Portrait' that night in a very 'music-hall' fashion indicating how much of a superb and engaging performer he is. There are many other tracks just as good on this album. This comes from someone who has been around some 45 years and I don't give praise out that freely! There isn't a bad song on the album so if you like any of the tracks you'll like all of them. He will be huge!!
Heard the band when they were supported Crowded House on their recent tour and was intigued by their sound. I bought the album and have to say it is just amazing - fabulous poetry, catchy tunes and a certain quirkiness which is just terrific!!
