I decided to read Bigger's Charlie Chan novels because I'd seen many of the movies and enjoyed them. On the whole I like the novels more! Surprising because in the novels Charlie is less of a presence than in the films with other characters having more of the action and dialogue. However the novels are well written with an eye and ear to the times and environment in which they are set. Absent are the clownish No 1 son and foolish parody black chauffeur Birmingham - 2 characters I found irritating in the films. Not great detective stories as such but fairly good observations of the American monied classes of the time.
