I have to be honest, was not really a big fan of Elton even though he is arguably one of the world's greatest musicians/singers, technically at least, and I thought most of his 80s and 90s output was pretty awful. In the 70s though he was rather more inventive and this, one of his earlier albums, released 1973 is about the nearest he ever got to making a great album. There are many different musical styles here - prog rock, hard rock, reggae, country, breezy pop and surprisingly good balladry on what was initially a double album release. Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting is brilliant driving rock, Grey Seal is great driving pop, All the Girls love Alice is a great pop rock song, the title track, Ballad of Danny Bailey and the original version here of Candle in the Wind (by far the very best version he ever recorded of it) are all surprising among the best ballads he has ever recorded. Best of all though is the opening track Funeral for a Friend/Love lies Bleeding - 11 minutes of brilliant prog/hard rock which gradually builds up from a quiet key/synth beginning to a guitar dominated rock song. Nearly everyone will probably own this album already but if you don't it's well worth a listen at least. Read full review

Although a CD the sound quality is as good as any sound available in today's market. Highly recommended. James.

Bought this album after watching 'Classic Albums' on Sky Arts - it's brilliant, many well known tracks but some I'd never heard before and they too are timeless. Elton's iconic voice was superb in his youth and this album expresses his talent and musicality of that amazing time. A really 'must have' album for your collection. Jennie (67)
