To be honest I have never been a big fan of the Editors that was until I heard their latest singles on Radio 1. I really liked them and ended up humming along to them all day. I decided to take the chance and buy the album. What an album it is. I would definitely rate it up there with such bands as Muse, Coldplay and Embrace all of which I really enjoy listening to. There is something strangely hypnotic about the album, I don't know if it's to do with the excellent lyrics, the sound of the instruments or the deep meaningful voice of lead singer Tom Smith. But every time I listen to this album I seem to drift away from all life's little problems and end up gazing out of my window feeling happy and relaxed. I find myself thinking that never before has an album made me feel like this for an extremely long time. We all need an album like this in our collections for those days when we just need to chill and remember how great life really is. Vocals/Guitar: Tom Smith Guitar: Chris Urbanowicz Bass Guitar: Russell Teetch Drums: Ed Lay Here's a selection.. TRACK 1: Smokers Outside the Hospital Door This is the first track on the CD to be released as a single. It is a really good song to feature first on the album as it is what I would call a 'hands in the air, feel good festival classic'. It is embraced even further by the choir halfway through. The lyrics are very powerful and the music gives it that upbeat feel to it. It is definitely a 'festival classic' even if its raining it will still make people feel good A feel good 9/10 TRACK 2: An End has a Start This was the 2nd song to be released as a single. It is a great song to follow Smokers Outside the Hospital Door as this one is a lot more upbeat. This one is another festival classic that will have people dancing and maybe even air guitaring. The lyrics are great and the chorus is so catchy I find myself singing it hours after I have listened to it which to me is a good thing but probably not for the poor people around me ;-) A catchy 10/10 TRACK 3: The Weight of the World This song really is a powerful ballad. The lyrics are so strong and meaningful. I really cant imagine anyone else singing this song other than Tom Smith as his voice seems to magnify the beauty of this song and it is helped along greatly by the music itself. It is very similar to the style of Coldplay but to me is much better. A beautiful 8/10 TRACK 4: Bones This is a great song to follow track 3 because it picks you back up with its up-tempo music and lyrics. Possibly not a festival classic but one of the songs that will always go down well with the crowd at any live event. It's a really toe tappingly, head noddingly good song. A toe tapping 7/10 Track 5:When Anger Shows This song really is hauntingly beautiful, with the piano at the beginning, the gentle tapping of the drums and the soft but hypnotic voice of Tom Smith. You can feel it all coming together and building up for an explosive ending. This really is an excellent song which keeps you captivated all the way through TRACK 6: The Racing Rats This is another good song, it is very up tempo and is another hands in the air festival classic. It will leave everyone feeling happy and wanting more, the lyrics and music are really good but it is enhanced more by the piano at the beginning. TRACK 7: Push Your Head towards the Air This is another ballad style song which again is performed beautifully by Tom Smith.Read full review
Undeniably The Editors have a unique sound. Whether or not you like their rare sound is the only question you need to answer to know if this album is your cup of tea. If you can stand the editors high-pitched rhythmic guitar tunes, `droney' vocals and random drumbeats then this is another fantastic album from the masters of miserable music. (If you can't, give it a try anyway!) Yes, I have to admit the tracks may not sound very cheerful, but when you're listening to any one of the songs, you forget about everything else but the magnificent music filling your head. Compared to the last album, The Back Room, this album is quite different. Although I wouldn't say it's an improvement. Firstly the album is a little short with only 10 tracks. And there aren't any classic songs like Lights, Munich or All Sparks, besides their first single, Smokers outside the hospital door. I would think they may have lost their confidence, but instead I feel they have tried to create many long and explosive songs. Unfortunately I don't think they've succeeded, as a few of these songs are bit too long and a bit too repetitive. This however, is their only fault. Each song is incredibly infectious and as I listen to them on my ipod as I'm walking home, there are moments where I have to urge to stop walking, look towards the sky, raise my arms and scream along with the inspirational lyrics. Luckily, I just about stop myself. For me, the best tracks on the album are Smokers, Racing Rats, Escape The Nest and Push your head towards the air. Although after enough listens EVERY track is mind-blowingly good. If you liked their debut album you will like this just as much. End of!Read full review
If you enjoyed the first Editors album The Back Room this new release is a logical progression continuing the theme of massive "jangling" guitars and strong powerful passionate vocals from Tom Smith. Let's not "beat around the bush" here The Editors are a very very good band and are clear pretenders to the Artic Monkeys crown as top UK band. Comparisons to Interpol have been made but The Editors have an overall bigger sound than the stripped back US band. Anyone who saw their performance at Glastonbury watched the arrival of this band on the major scene and this brilliant album will enhance their progress. The track "An End Has A Start" could be a candidate for single of the year but other stand out tracks "Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors", "The Weight Of The World" and "Bones" really set this album alight. This could be one of the albums of the year so don't miss out and have lsiten to the best band in UK music.Read full review
