This movie tells the story of a group of boys, called the Z-Boys from Dogtown (which is Venice, California) who revolutionized the world of skateboarding. They were the first to start "vertical" skating - which is the way we know it know. With ramps and pipes and aerial stunts. However, this movie showed me that it wasn't always like that. Before the Z-Boys, skateboarding meant just skating on a flat surface, doing lame things like hand stands on a skateboard. The Z-Boys, being bored and poor kids, trying to find a way to entertain themselves over the long hot summer, started skating in empty swimming pools, and that's how the whole thing started. The movie showcases what happens to the three core guys in the group: Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Jay Adams. All three are played by brilliant actors, and especially Emile Hirsch, who plays Jay Adams, has a real presence on screen. He draws you in every time you see him in a scene, and I really enjoyed his performance. I hope he keeps acting and we'll see him in more movies, because he totally rocks. :D Anyways, the movie is totally cool too, I love the whole underground culture they had at that time, and the fact that it's a true story only makes it more powerful. Definitely go see this if you are at all interested in sports, skateboarding, or stories about friendships and success!Read full review
I bought this DVD for my skateboarding mad teen, as it's his favourite film. An interesting insight into the bare roots of the sport, retro boards, 70's fashion and swimming pool action galore (the empty kind!!). It wasn't a film of choice but I found myself glued to the sofa and stayed until the end, wept a few tears at the sad moments, laughed at the jokes and even contemplated doing an ollie or two to my son's disgust. A wonderful film and fine tribute to the late Heath Ledger.
i bought this dvd, because as a life long skateboarder & surfer,i totaly relate to it as i grew up in the same era,did the same things, even met stacy peralta, when he opened a skate park, near me back in the 70s.
