If you can pick this two-disc box set up for less than £5, then it is probably good value, even though they are two of the worst films ever made. If you were daft enough to pay full price for both films individually then you will probably want to buy some of these magic beans I have for sale. These two "masterpieces" are from two of the writers that brought you "Scary Movie". Even the most rabid Alyson Hannigan ("Buffy") fan has to conceed that "Date Movie" is a pile of tosh. The only good thing to be said is that at least at only 81 minutes, it doesn't have time to outstay its welcome. But only just. I could feel my brain starting to fry. My advice: Watch "Not Another Teen Movie" instead. It's like "Citizen Kane" in comparison to this. "Epic Movie" comes in at 91 minutes (including some 16 minutes of end credits and outtakes - how can this many people be responsible for something this bad???) and is only slightly more bearable. The only real "name" among the cast is Jennifer Coolidge who has enjoyed a resurgence in her career of late ever since "American Pie" and indeed is the perfect "MILF". She is probably the only person to come out of this with any credit at all and does elevate proceedings slightly whenever she is on the screen. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the four actors playing the main "orphan" characters, with Jayma Mays (Lucy) seemingly only cast because she bears more than a passing similiarity to Anna Faris from the "Scary Movie" franchise. I get the feeling that Faris was sensible enough to turn Friedberg & Seltzer down for this one. She probably read the script! The rest of the cast is largely made up of people brought in from look-a-like agencies or impersonators from "Saturday Night Live". The Johnny Depp-alike who plays Captain Jack Swallows (Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean) does a good enough job, but I can't say the same for the person they got to play Samuel L. Jackson who tries to spoof "Snakes on a Plane", and the Paris Hilton impersonator is no better. Frankly, you'd be better off sticking "Scary Movie" in your DVD player. It is 100 times funnier than this. You can't beat a bit of Leslie Nielson though. "Airplane", "The Naked Gun". He's the real master of the spoof genre. Jason Freidberg & Aaron Seltzer are just talentless hacks. Sure to be in the bargain basement bin at your local Blockbuster Video store before too long, sat alongside "Meet the Spartans". Buy it only if it is cheap enough. Really cheap. Or free. Not recommended.Read full review
