The Big Dirty (or TBD) is, in my opinion, ETID's greatest work yet, marrying the anthemic qualities of pop-punk with the raw edge of modern hardcore and a unique twist of southern rock. Keith Buckley was quoted as saying that Gutter Phenomenon was written as an apology for the arrogant swagger of Hot Damn! and Last Night in Town, and TBD is most certainly a return to old form, with Buckley's deafening roars giving way to his trademark vocal sneer more often than ever before. Musically, TBD is streets ahead of ETID's early work, with the intricacy of Andy's and Jordan's guitar work being a particular highlight. Songs like INRIhab and Rendez-Voodoo swing wildly from the crushing to the dizzyingly complex, all with the album's customary southern-fried tinge. Mike Novak's playing is as solid as ever, and the bassist brought in to work on this album does his job well, if not remarkably so. Tight, brutal and oozing confidence, this is an album of musical extremes. Lyricallly, the album smacks yet again of arrogance, all steeped in a borrowed southern legacy (the boys hail from Buffalo, New Jersey, about as un-southern a place as can be imagined). Buckley's flair for language is apparent in lead single We'rewolf . The calibre of guest-vocalist is much improved over previous offerings (Gerard Way, and on ETID's newest album, Pete Wentz) with the esteemed Dallas Green of Alexisonfire lending his voice to INRIhab. Anyone who knows of Green will know he has what is considered to be one of the best voices in Hardcore circles, his glassy, cutting, almost angelic tones contrasting beautifully with Keith's bellowing pomp and swagger. To conclude, TBD is ETID's best album, none before or since can compete. This is due to its interesting fusion of Hardcore, Pop-Punk and Southern Rock, and to ETID's astounding talent for making the best Melodic Hardcore out there.Read full review
