Family Guy has been a hugely successful competitor to the reigning cartoon kings The Simpsons for many years. Having fired out over 100 episodes across 6 or 7 series, the makers decided to pay a tribute to one of their favourite movies, Star Wars - A New Hope. The Blue Harvest title derives from the code name used by George Lucas during the filming of Return of the Jedi to keep curious and prying eyes away from the sets. To get the best from this homage, a basic understanding of the characters of Family Guy and Star Wars is a great help, but not entirely essential, however it should be remembered that this is a "fan-boy" movie, so expect lots of "in" jokes and running gags from the series. The movie itself is highly entertaining, and offers a rough-shod romp across the Star Wars story, with Peter Griffin and co. carrying out an almost scene by scene rehash of the plot. Highlights include a moving musical number between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker that seems to have been missed off the original Star Wars film offering a whole new angle to these key characters relationship. There is also some fantastic casting choices to look out for - some of them truly inspired, such as Gran Moff Tarkin played by Adam West. See if you can spot Meg....always the butt of rather cruel jokes within Family Guy. Overall the movie is a geeks interpretaion of the original Star Wars film, but is infectious and carried out beautifully and with genuine affection. The animation has been done with great care and attention to detail, and the script is brilliantly funny. Can't recommend this enough to fans, as it stands as the best spoof of Star Wars yet made. An essential for fans of both genres. The special eddition contains a few collectors extras - a nicely designed, if a little flimsy, T-shirt, 3D glasses for an even greater nostalgia trip, collectors cards and a couple of other bits and bobs, but the movie itself is the important bit and is the same as on the basic DVD version.
