"Fiddler On The Roof" has been called by many as a celebration of the Jewish spirit. While that is a correct perception, it's not limited to being simply a "Jewish" experience. This amazing film is a inspiration to all, Jew and non-Jew, serving as a universal affirmation of the inner strength and faith within each and everyone of us. The faith and traditions that make us who we are and help us face the challenges that await in this everchanging, often hostile environment. For Tevye (Haim Topol), a poor, kind-hearted husband and father of five daughters it's his love for God and family that keeps him strong enough to face the continual trials and tribulations brought about by pressures both within his faith community as well as the greater community-at-large. His spirituality is expressed to all by his devotion and adherence to the faith and traditions of Judaism, which are personified on-screen by a solitary fiddler that only Tevye can see. This film will make you laugh and it will make you cry as it takes the viewer through the full gamit of human emotions. Own It! Watch It! It Will Never Fail To Lift Your Spirits! One of my all time favourites. As a kid I loved the "If I were a rich man" song and 30 years later I still love it. As an adult I love the humour and the very clever wit, brilliant acting, great story line and have found it to be completely timeless. It makes me smile, laugh, and cry. A great film for the whole family. I really wanted the DVD for myself and to hopefully get my kids to watch it so they can appreciate something other than the mindless, big bang, dumbed down, shallow rubbish movies that Hollywood seems to churn out endlessly and seem to be all the rage.
I love the film Fiddler on the roof, so with changes in viewing now I wanted to get an up to date DVD, so I can continue to see it at my own pleasure and maybe even my children. As it is easy and less space to store than a video. I enjoy the songs and the actors. A very young Paul Michael Glaser. Even Roger Lloyd Pack is in it again young but still distinct look which we know from Only fools and Horses or even Vicar of Dibley. I like the story of how poor people lived and worked to survive many hardships, but it contains some good humour too. To me this is a classic film to cherish and a lovely break from too many explicit films of violence.
i liked the fact that it was basically about family life with the father going out to work and there being all the trials and tribulations of the family for e.g the children having their ideas about what should happen then the father seeing the changes in life and respecting their choices. I bought this one because of the music it was attached to and also because it brought back childhood memories of my own
A fantastic film which warms the heart. It explores the importance of family bonds and the respect that exists between members of a family unit. The problems between different religions is paramount to the film The songs are fabulous and its a film that can be watched time and time again.
