1st Edition

NICHOLAS NICKLEBY

By Charles Dickens

Extremely scarce and fine first printing of the first edition of Dickens's famous novel 'Nicholas Nickleby. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, printed in 1839.

8vo. 624p.p. Beautifully illustrated throughout by 'Phiz'., and with a frontispiece by Donald Maclise.

Bound with Half title, page xv with the frontispiece of Dickens not listed, with "visiter" for "sister" on page 123, line 17.

'latter' for 'letter' 6 lines up, page160.

Plates opposite pages 18 and 25 have ‘London, Chapman and Hall’ stamp on bottom of plate.

Plates for pages 100 and 116 are the wrong way round as to what is listed, the plate for page 100 is opposite page 116 and the plate for page 116 is opposite page 100.

Bound in exquisite contemporary morocco, over buckram, with profuse gilt-tooled decoration to the spine. Raised bands. Externally, it is somewhat rubbed to the spine and corners - but this is commensurate with age. Very tight and unrolled. Internally it is remarkably clean; text pages clean and the plates with only light toning.

A smart armorial bookplate to the front pastedown for John Pemberton Heywood (former owner of Cloverley Hall). With owners inscription in pencil dated 1841.

Overall, this is a very fine, impressive and rare book indeed.
