This is a book that can’t be hurried. The discussion of music composition is thorough and uses many examples from the established repertoire - Beethoven , Brahms, Bach and so on. Schoenberg is very methodical, showing his great understanding of music and composition up to and including the Romantic composers. Though we think of Schoenberg for his 12 note serialism, this book is about composition prior to that innovation or direction. The more the boom is studied, the more you get out of the book.
