Funny Girl = Outstanding, Funny Lady = Give it a miss!
My 5 out of 5 rating is for the Funny Girl film, as thankfully the DVD's came as 2 separate jewel-cased DVD's in a cardboard sleeve. The original Funny Girl is superb, as Barbra Streisand plays an absolutely stunning portrayal of Fanny Brice, with Omar Sharif as Nicky Arnstein, Walter Pidgeon as Florenz Ziegfeld and Kay Medford as the mother of Fanny Brice. Some people see musicals as a bit stupid, with music just starting up and people start singing, but it is simply escapism, so no different from sci-fi films or over the top CGI scenes prevalent in just about every film these days. This film not only has the absolutely breathtaking vocals of Barbra Streisand, it has a good plot as she falls in love with Nicky Arnstein and forgives him his habit of gambling which ultimately ends up in a ... The film is both very funny and equally tragic and is loosely based on the early lives of Fanny Brice and Nicky Arnstein and their turbulent relationship, which is a great story and when this is complimented by some fantastic Streisand classics like ‘People’ and the truly inspirational ‘Don’t rain on my Parade’, the finished product is a cinemagraphic work of art, worthy of the best actress Oscar which Streisand won and the plethora of nominations that it received. Now onto Funny Lady…….don’t even bother, as this is one of the most obvious attempts to cash in on the success of an original, with a truly awful plot and a less than mediocre soundtrack, which is never going to be a good reason to watch a musical. I will say no more, but I will always view it as a couple of hours of my life that I will never get back.

Re - watched these films after a long time! Enjoyed both of them but prefer Funny Girl. Barbara Streisand is marvellous! Made me laugh and cry!
