A weak sequel to "Up the Creek" very good cast of 60's regulars and although a fan of Frankie Howerd, this was not a strong performance, it includes a lot of shouting by Frankie which does not come over well, in this sequel Frankie has replaced Peter Sellers as the Boson but unfortunately it loses some of the comedy from the first film. I still enjoyed performances from David Tomlinson and Lionel Jefferies and would recommend to anyone who enjoys these nautical tales.
Frankie Howerd was the master of a certain type of comedy , best shown in shows like Up Pompeii and Whoops Baghdad . That is : working with and reacting to an audience . His work in this is constrained by the movie making process and it is not a laugh out loud type of movie . About level with the weaker Carry On offerings . Really only for collectors of all Frankie's work .
If you like situation comedy with a bit of a plotline and a big ship navy background, you will like the crazy situations that the cast get into and then try to get out of. It seems to be set in the relatively low-tech 1960s, so privacy and secrecy are possible on the warship - unlike modern times where cctv probes every part of each ship! There is the usual rushing of illegal guests from staterooms and cabins to avoid accidental discovery by the officers. It is worth watching if you enjoy some quiet chuckling, but it won't get your adrenalin running.
