Guns 'n Roses have always been legendary and Chinese Democracy shows the band have matured over the years. This CD isn't chock full of individual great songs but instead offers a start to finish overall experience - you really do have to play all of it to understand what I'm talking about. If you forget the Axl / Slash arguments for one minute and actually listen to it you will find that it has been thoughtfully and carefully created to give a superb album well worth having in your collection.
Took me a while to buy this album. Bought it in the end due to my girlfriend getting me tickets to see them at Manchester MEN. I must say, I LOVE it. It's a great mixture of classic GNR with sweeping rock ballads and heavy rock anthems. The album over it epic 14 tracks still manages to feel fresh and new at points. You can easily tell that Axl is the boss on this one and did not have to try and please any new band members. It's almost like his solo album under the GNR banner. His voice is still as powerful and provocative as ever from the screeching title track to the epic finale of 'Prostitue'. Worth the 14 year wait? No. Thoroughly welcomed? Most definitely! *****
Pretentious, long winded and outdated even before it's release. Legend tells of a number of re recordings as Axl muscled members out of the revolving line up and alienated the people who tried to help him with his 'opus'. If you're an old school Guns N' Roses fan you're better off checking out Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver or Slash's solo projects. If you really have a Guns itch to scratch check out the live recordings of the classics to hear how they sounded live in their prime rather than the tribute act and parody that the name has become.
While Chinese democracy isn't a good Gun's N' Roses album it's still an enjoyable time in of its self. Still showing a good level of artistry in the lyrics and instrumentation. If you go in with an open mind you'll probably enjoy it.
