If you have not seen this movie, I would strongly suggest it. The film is endowed firstly by the colourful and almost hypnotic performance of Daniel Day Lewis which I would rate as one of his most defining roles to date. Di Caprio is solid as ever and turns in a passionate performance as the son after revenge for his slaughtered father at the hands of Lewis. A blend of fact and fiction with relentless detail on show via the purpose built set and striking fashions of the day, this movie encapsulates a very real period of American history that many wanted forgotten and undiscovered by the modern age. From pitched battles between fire brigades to the criminal behaviour of politicians and the mass immigration of Irish to New York City, this film just has so much on offer and all kept in check by it's director Scorcese.Read full review
