When released with an original RRP of £50.00 in February 1981 the Hornby Advanced Passenger Train was a true ground breaker as well as an excellent rendition and capture of the characteristically unique Class 370 or APT-P 25 kV Overhead Electric Multiple Unit. At the time of course the APT-P was being hailed as the future of WCML London Euston to Glasgow trunk express passenger services and test runs being conducted on the WCML saw one APT-P Unit chalking up a record 155 mph speed. Then ... It ALL went wrong for the troublesome and massively over budget APT-P Project and these were withdrawn from the limited services they had been deployed on by the tail end of the following year. The effectiveness of the Inter City 125 or High Speed Train (HST) was just too great in comparison and the opportunity cost financially just became too great. As a model the Class 370 APT-P must be acquired with a pantograph preferably or one is looking at £40.00 and UPWARDS to buy the spare part seperately! There were two differing liveries available: R543 featured plain yellow ends and the alternative release features black window surroundings and 'Inter-City APT' titles in black over the front. Both livery variations featured the Power Car Sc49003 'City of Derby' to power them from the middle and came in both Train Set and Train Pack formats. All vehicles are silver-seal wheel fitted and the Power Car features an adapted Ringfield Engine where the fittings are unique to this model. There were working lights fitted at the front as standard which work via 12 v DC track pick up through the front wheelsets. Only gripe is that for some reason Hornby numbered one driving vehicle as '370 001' as the identity for the Electric Multiple Unit whilst numbering the opposite end '370 002' making it appear as if two different APT-P Units have been cut in two and amalgamated as a single formation: This is factually incorrect! Models come with a five tilting vehicle consist which is powered from the middle and includes two driving units, two standard open carriages and a single Power Car. The actual APT ran at twice this length with ten vehicles in each consist. So ... It's a 9/10 from me for that numbering discrepancy being present instead of the 10/10 I would have awarded had that not been present.Read full review
