I needed a replacement PC. I've always built my own, so this was new for me. It came with Windows 7 64-bit professional and 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD installed. What impressed me most was that it plain-out just worked perfectly. I had to update the drivers, so that my ASUS VE247 monitor could use it (this PC uses a VGA connection, not HDMI), but it is clear, crisp and stable. With AV installed it absolutely flies and even with, it isn't bad. Clearly HP have made a machine that gave corporations a solid, reliable, competent machine. This isn't the latest gamer's machine, but if your are a user who expects a snappy performance, even with a lot of applications, then this will be fine. There is a little fan noise, but it is not excessive and I'm sure that a few self-adhesive acoustic panels will fix that. When I stack it up against my previous ASUS motherboard, generic case, RAM, power supply and all of those extras, this is a much better deal. Building is no longer better than buying and 'secondhand' seems to have little bearing on anything - (it's only about 3 years old AFAIK). Another thing that I really needed was the ability to communicate with old Psion devices over RS232. Obviously, Windows 7 won't run ancient Windows 9x software but XP will and I was able to download and install Virtual XP using Microsoft's Virtual PC and this negotiated all the connectivity hassles for me on autopilot. I found that I could run Winlink 3 and OVAL and generally communicate with no issues using old Psion software whatsoever. Of course, it is not just the old stuff. Windows 7 is right now, the only viable replacement for XP and of course, all the modern applications still work fine with it. There is no CD with Windows supplied, but I got over that problem by installing Acronis 2015 as soon as the basic peripheral drivers were installed and creating a full image. I'm making further images as I bring the machine closer to what my old one was, before it died. I'm half minded to by another one and simply keep it boxed, as a backup, as parts will inevitably become scarce in years to come.Read full review
