This DVD contains the earliest surviving episodes of Tony Hancock's TV show from the late fifties. Considering some of the comedy is 53 years old now, it has aged remarkably well. The DVD is in good quality black and white with good sound. If you are a fan of any of the following, then this DVD will probably interest you: 1. Steptoe and Son An excellent comedy from the sixties and seventies - an absolute classic! This series of Hancock was written by Steptoe's writers; the excellent Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. Considering they were still in their twenties when writing the (earlier) Hancocks, the material is surprisingly mature. Very funny with some bittersweet moments. 2. Sid James Yes, the lad himself from the Carry On films. He plays a lovable rogue / housemate / small time crook in the Hancock series. 3. Hattie Jacques / June Whitfield / Liz Fraser All from the Carry On films - they also appeared in various Hancock TV shows. 4. John le Mesurier From Dad's Army (Sergeant Wilson, I think). You can also see early appearances from the likes of Arthur Mullard. If you are a fan of classic comedy, then you will probably like this DVD very much. The most famous Hancock episodes such as the Blood Donor and The Radio Ham occur in later series but the early ones such as The Alpine Holiday and The Lawyer (both of which are included here) are very entertaining. There's also a Christmas special enclosed in the DVD which is the "East Cheam Drama Festival"... some of you may remember this from radio shows etc.Read full review
I bought this dvd because i have never seen any of Tony Hancocks dvds and i just wanted to see what i was like.
Any Tony Hancock fans will love these episodes. Superbly acted out, without the need to be smutty or lewd like so many modern day comedians. Although Hancock eventually decided not to have Sid James co-acting with him, the episodes where they are together are always funny as they bounce off each other so well. I so enjoyed these that I quickly bought volumes 2, 3 and 4 as well.
