You will find lots of books on the old blues masters, but if you want the full story of Blind Willie McTell, this is the only one to get. Author Michael Gray takes over 350 pages to fill out the history of the man who wrote Statesborough Blues, Dying Crapshooeter's Blues and many others on his trusty 12-string guitar. Gray fills out the book with much detail on McTell's ancestry, the US Civil War, slavery and the Civil Rights movement. There is plenty of context here! If you just want a brief history of BWM you can probably find it in a CD booklet. This book is the proverbial journey starting with his great grandparents and following it through to the one-hour recording session with Ed Rhodes in 1956 and his eventual death. If you're from the Twitter generation, skip this. But if you remember books (like the Internet, but made of trees), then this is a rewarding read on a worthy subject.Read full review
