For me, to read Murakami is to be hurtled along on a white-neuron ride: it takes this ineffable genius - who at times makes me gasp - to create such a densely-layered narrative which moves from banal everyday, to horror, to tragedy to farce, with no continuity-break. Such original images, such expression of ontological truths so fugitive as to be like the skull dreams. And underlying it all, the truly horrific threat of the ultimate destruction of our freedoms, inner and outer. We've got so used to living within oppression, we don't even acknowledge it. I won't use the K-esque word (!) but just to say, Murakami is bearable to read (unlike Kafka!) because his everyman protagonists embody the endearing, brave, resigned, compassionate, hedonistic and more, qualities which make us human. Oh, and Murakami is hilarious. This is the third novel of his I've read. They're not easy but they stay with you. This is the most scary so far. Scary because true. I can picture this book as a surreal horror film.Read full review
