About this product

Product Information

Summer, 1545. England is at war. Henry VIII's invasion of France has gone badly wrong, and a massive French fleet is preparing to sail across the Channel . . . Meanwhile, Matthew Shardlake is given an intriguing legal case by an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr. Asked to investigate claims of `monstrous wrongs' committed against his young ward, Hugh Curteys, by Sir Nicholas Hobbey, Shardlake and his assistant Barak journey to Portsmouth. There, Shardlake also intends to investigate the mysterious past of Ellen Fettiplace, a young woman incarcerated in the Bedlam. Once in Portsmouth, Shardlake and Barak find themselves in a city preparing for war. The mysteries surrounding the Hobbey family and the events that destroyed Ellen's family nineteen years before, involve Shardlake in reunions both with an old friend and an old enemy close to the throne. Soon events will converge on board one of the king's great warships gathered in Portsmouth harbour, waiting to sail out and confront the approaching French fleet. . .

A great book in good condition, as described and securely packaged. For readers of crime fiction in an historical genre, the Shardlake books can become quite addictive; no less so than this fifth volume in the series. A very positive transaction.

  • great reading at any price!

I was already a huge fan of Matthew Shradlake (the main character)and have read all the previous books in the series For me this was the best so far which is a huge achievment as it usually proves difficult to manintain a high standard in a series of books or movies Shradlake is an unlikely hero,a physically weak man with a hunchback and to cap it all a member of the legal profession But he is,a thoroughly likeable man principled, scrupulous and fair who reminds me of a real life hero of mine the Roman senator Cicero The whodunnit plots in all the series interwoven with actual historic events are captivating and I felt as if I was observing the scenes first hand even the life and stinky smells of the 16th Century My only disappointment is that when I finished reading each of the books, how ...
