Selling my 1040cc Turbo Charged Full Race Hillman Imp Engine from my race Davrian (recently sold). I was planning to keep this engine to use in a road car project, but due to financal issues and an imminent move to Canada, I am having to sell her.
If you are familiar with my old car then you will appreciate what this engine is. I have owned and run Imps for over 20 years and to my knowledge, this is probably the most powerful Imp engine made. She made a genuine 170bhp on the dyno as a 998cc engine, but has now been upgraded to 1040cc, so I would expect that figure to raise to 180bhp+
Originally built by the late Andy Chesman, I have been told that this engine was one of two turbo engines he made. I believe that the other was used by Andy in one of his race boats. The engine was extensively developed by Colin Parrot and then further tuned and improved by myself (Martin Jones) whilst racing from 1999-2004. It took the Davrian to 2 class wins in 1999 and 2000 in the HSA Hillclimb / Sprint Championship. Class record at MIRA with a 52 second lap time (which was about 6 seconds quicker than the next imp engined car). Numerous class records and many wins.
In 2004 I decided to rebuild the engine to produce more power and better low end torque. The engine was rebored to 1040cc and the bottom end completely rebuilt and blueprinted by Dennis Allt. She has not been run since then and currently she is as shown in the pictures with the head removed. I have all gaskets / rings etc to rebuild and the engine is complete. All parts are in excellent condition although the water pump is tight so it may need replacing (I was going to change to an electric one anyway). All parts are included along with inlet/exhaust manifold, carb, plenum chamber, exhaust etc (as shown).
Spec of engine as follows:
1040cc block with long liners and spacer plate (this reduces the compression ratio to around 8:1
Arrow EN24 Con Rods (brand new)
Forged Pistons (the name escapes me but very high quality with big valve cutouts - brand new)
Standard Tuffrided crank (brand new)
Hardened race shell bearings (brand new)
New Oil Pump with Phospher Bronze Drive Gear
Fully strengthened bottom end with plate and bearing blocks
Large capacity fully baffled sump
Big Valve Full Race Chesman Head with massive valves and some of the best polished ports I have ever seen! Mild skim and machined for 1040 Wills Rings. Welded between 2 and 3 for extra strength.
Race Valve Guides (new) gas flowed
Original Hartwell 410 lift Cam with Solid Billet Carrier. Head pocket machined to prevent tappet escape!
Cosworth Hardened Race Tappets
Full Race dual valve springs
Modified chain tensioner
Race Luminition Distributor (no leads sorry)
Custom Inlet / Exhaust Manifold
IHI Custom Hybrid Turbo (specifically built for the engine)
Custom inlet system blowing through air cooled intercooler into Delorto twin 40 carb (carb is a special from a Lotus Esprit Turbo with balanced chambers)
Stainless steel exhaust system with seperate waste gate exhaust
All engine nuts are Aircraft with aircraft bolts fitted where possible.
This is a trully impressive engine and not for the faint harted. All the power comes in at around 4500 rpm and it goes beserk up to 9000 rpm (limited). Boost was limited to 17psi, but with the new bottom end, it should be fine to run up to 20psi. On the hills I was often told it sounded like the works Audi Quattro engine with the waste gate chattering in between gear changes :-)
I added a dump valve to the system in 2004 (included) but it did not make much difference to it's performance. My next plans in it's development were to run fuel injection with a fully mapped ECU. I have added a trigger wheel and sensor to the front of the engine which could be used for this if required. I have also played around with the possibility of dry sumping, an anti lag system and converting to twin 40's. I have a number of parts / twin 40 manifolds etc which could be negotiated after the sale with the winning bidder (if you are interested). They are not for sale seperately so please do not ask.
I have added as much detail as I can. Please be aware that to make this engine run in your car, you will need to modify your fuel system (to a variable pressure, return to tank system), add a boost control valve (aftermarket ones are easy to obtain) and install a high voltage race coil / ignition system. These parts are not included with the engine.
Winning bidder please pay £200 with Paypal. Balance cash on collection please (or bank transfer if you wish me to send on a pallet etc).
I will run the sale as an auction only so there is no buy it now price sorry.
I will post internationally as long as buyer covers shipping costs. I'm not sure exactly, but I estimate the engine weighs around 100Kg complete and would fill a pallet.
