There aren't many books I struggle through - but this? If I find a book tedious (too much description and not enough narrative for example), I skip through all the descriptive stuff and pick out the narrative, just so as I don't have to plough through what I feel, for the most part, is irrelevant. However, even the narrative I found baffling, hints of this, hints of that, but nothing concrete. I am the sort of person who will look at (a film) or read a book till the bitter end, hoping that there is a glimmer of something, which often leads to disappointment on reaching the end of a long and tedious plot for it to come to nothing. Whether this book does reach a satisfactory conclusion or not, I have no idea as half way through, I put the book down, never to pick it up again. It has been given to a local charity shop. How it won (is it the Orange Prize - see? I can't even be bothered to find out what award it attained) any accolade at all is beyond my limited comprehension. I rest my case.Read full review

Exremely well written. Difficult subject especially the over powering religious indoctrination of family
