bought it for my grandson value for money its never off when he comes most days he knows it off by heart now
With computer animation being such a big hit with audiences of all ages (witness the piles of money raked in by the likes of Toy Story and Shrek), it was only a matter of time before 20th Century Fox got their piece of the pie. Ice Age, a family movie starring furry animals and set in prehistoric times, is their maiden voyage into this lucrative genre--and it's not that impressive, especially in light of the competition. Manny (voice provided by Ray Romano) is a giant woolly mammoth whose migration is unexpectedly complicated with the discovery of a lone human baby. Although he distrusts people, the great shaggy traveler decides to take the helpless infant and deliver it to its family. Joining him in his journey across the wilderness are a chatty sloth named Sid (voice of John Leguizamo) and a saber-toothed tiger named Diego (voice of Denis Leary), whose services as a helpful guide belie a more insidious agenda. Along the way, this mismatched trio and their delicate cargo face danger from predators, harsh weather, and fanatic Dodo birds. The story is decidedly targeted at children. The run-of-the-mill lesson about the importance of family is like Disney's Lilo and Stitch minus the heart. Virtually every plot element is generic, from Manny and Sid's odd couple relationship to a villain's change of heart when he is shown kindness. Ice Age does little to advance the science of computer animation. It dabbles with creating fire and shows off some small, lifelike dust clouds, but there's nothing that is particularly new to the artform. Aesthetically, many of the animals are as unappealing as the title insects in 1998's Antz, while the people look downright inhuman. Manny the mammoth is amusing, if only because he's Ray Romano's big, dumb voice coming out of a big, dumb beast (although slipping in some of the comedian's stand-up material is a forced and cheesy move). But Sid, in typical sidekick-gone-wrong fashion, borders on irritating. Haven't the studios learned anything from Jar Jar Binks? You'd think by now they would have figured out this simple calculation: annoying comic relief character - comic relief = annoying character. By far, the funniest critter in Ice Age is the one who says the least: a saber-toothed squirrel called Scrat whose singled-minded obsession over an acorn leads to a whole lot of trouble. This twitchy-eyed rodent is like a crack addict who can't catch a break, a compulsive freak who will do whatever it takes to get the almighty nut. It's no wonder that he's a favorite among viewers, and that the DVD includes bonus Scrat footage that wasn't available during the film's theatrical run. But even Scrat and his nut-fiending antics can't catapult this movie into greatness. Overall, Ice Age is a thoroughly mediocre entry in the world of computer generated feature films--entertaining and watchable, but doing almost nothing to push the envelope technologically or creatively.Read full review
This,as cool as ice film directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha is yet another film which utilizes the wonderful technology of Computer generated imagery. It seems that with the release of so many of these animated films that the new digitized cartoons are a form whose time has come. The time period is the dawn of Man.The dinosaurs have long since vanished from the Earth, and an Ice Age is fast approaching. The animals,at least most of them, are headed south for the long, hard winter. Among the exceptions are the industrious, frustrated squirrel, and three larger mammals:Manfred the Mammoth,Sid the Sloth and Diego the Sabertooth Cat.These three have banded together on an unlikely quest:to return a lost human baby to his tribe. However, while Manfred and Sid have the best intentions,Diego is pursuing his own agenda,a very sinister agenda.... I was tempted to rate this film 3/5 because it lacks the fit and finish of top-of-the-line films from Pixar,DreamWorks and Disney. However the company that produced this (Blue Sky) are relatively new on the block so its an impressive piece of work from a new feature animation group.Kids wont mind at all, they'll love it but adults accustomed to great animated films like Shrek and other Pixar outings will have no trouble spotting what's missing. Whilst Ice Age never matches the brilliance of Toy Story or the heartfelt heft of Shrek,it's an antic and sweet-spirited pleasure. Its an incredibly funny film and will have children and adults alike in stitches. The rat like squirrel named Scrat is without a doubt the funniest character in this film as he tries to bury his beloved acorn with disastrous effects.Sid the sloth is also side-splittingly funny and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) does an excellent job of voicing the laid back Mammoth named Manfred. You would be crazy not to rent or buy this film as,although it does not reach the heights of Toy Story and lacks the depth of Shrek there is still much fun to be had from this. I was very reluctant to watch this movie, i thought it was just ANOTHER movie for kids. A good friend of mine saw it, loved it and wouldn't shut up about it so i rented it and was hooked. So much so, that i've just bought it, and it's sequel (Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown). Whats so good about it? I'll tell you. This film is very cleverly put together, it's great, wholesome entertainment for kids but also has visuals and jokes in it for us bigger kids. It's a movie that can be enjoyed by all generations. It's very light-hearted. The story-line is great, it's different, it doesn't take long to get going, and will keep you entertained right through to the end. The characters are lovable, the script well written, and it's the kind of film you can watch over and over again. I also think it's very funny but that's just my opinion. The rough story-line is, without giving anything away; Everyone's migrating south for the winter except Sid the Sloth and Manny the Mammoth (for diff reasons), they find a human baby and, reluctantly on Manny's part, form a herd and set about trying to return the baby to 'it's herd'. With this story-line the film shouldn't work, but it does, and it's fab. You will enjoy it if you like Shrek, Madagascar, Over the Hedge, and of course the Disney Classics.Read full review
Great family film, especially for all the big kids out there age20+. You need to watch this a couple times as you miss bits when you are rolling about the floor laughing. Great cast of characters, set in prehistoric times, watch out for Scrat the squirrel rat who almost steals the show. Well worth watching.
