As expected from this Brand great quality black gesso that covers gessoed white canvas well in one coat. . The price of buying ready prepared black canvas shocked me so I bought the much cheaper white canvas sheets and framed white canvases and used the black gesso to make my own black canvas surfaces. Fab as the price of the jar allows me to cover many more canvases at a fraction of the price it would cost me for commmercial ready to use ones. Highly recommend this product.

This Pebeo black gesso deserves a good review. It ticks every box for what I look for in black gesso. It is as thick as double cream, which gives me time to work with it - some start to dry too quickly. It is not too chalky a finish, but very smooth, with a very slight satin sheen. It is also a true black. It can be thinned down and, applied in repeated thin layers, it makes the perfect base for lacquering. I also use it as a mat black paint, and have used guilding wax on it and chalks, but I mainly use it as a base for acrylic paints. I have even varnished over it. I have used it on grey board, M.D.F., hardboard, felt, and canvas. It’s great stuff!

Totally different effects from white gesso - opaque pigments show up on next layer and mica flakes or pearlescent paints can really shine... Difficult to see the colour of transparent pigments though. This is good gesso and shows brushmarks faintly, but would not work for impasto techniques. Dries within a couple of hours. Excellent value.

This product went a long way for me. It had excellent tack and gripped itself to the canvas instantly. There is nothing cheap about this product and at the price it is a good buy. The one drawback I found was if I secured the lid too tight then an epic struggle would ensue to loose it again.
