I had the album on vinyl but wished to have it on CD. It's legendary status is based on the fact that it kickstarted Bowie's Berlin period (recorded before but released after Bowie's own "Low" album) and much is made of the fact that it was discovered revolving on Ian Curtis' record player at the scene of his suicide. The musical backing still sounds otherworldly 31 years on. Iggy's vocal delivery is supreme but his spontaneous lyrics moer often than not lack the quality of the overall production, making "The Idiot" a fairly good album rather than the classic status awarded it in many quarters. "Sister Midnight" still posseses the capacity to shock you whilst you groove, and the often overlooked "Baby" does deserve reappraisal. "Tiny Girls" is uncomfortable listening in the current climate, however. "Mass Depression" is compared in Thomas Jerome Seabrook's book "Bowie in Berlin" to Joy Division's later "I Remember Nothing". The vocal delivery , the slow threatening pace and the general doomladen feel of the music does suggest this influenced Curtis's approach to the later track, but Iggy's lyrics are vastly improved on later, and the over indulgence on the analog synths jars on current listening ears.Read full review
Fantastic album used to own it on vinyl but lost or had it nicked at some stage.Think it was his 1st album after leaving Stooges some really good songs a very good album which grows on you the more you listen it.Funny thing is i bought this cd again after hearing it played on the movie "Control" incidently the last piece of music Ian Curtis(Joy Division) listened to before he committed suicide sadly what a loss! Highly recommend this recording if anyone spots it for sale on e-bay.
