When the CPU is put under load when running flight simulation and a game, now and then I hear a loud humming noise in the tower. I Never heard the humming noise when I was running the Core Duo CPU before I installed the Extreme CPU. The bios file version is correct to run the Extreme CPU, it was stated on Intel's website which bios version was needed to run the Intel Extreme Quad CPU.

Although not the most up to date processor, it does the job and is fast enough. There are faster cpu's but with the right mail board and enough memory this is good enough to run a lot of the games available. It is recognised as a quad core CPU and it will over clock if you need it to, although you must make sure you have a good heat sink as heat will kill it.

I bought this piece of kit recently as part of a new PC I was still building at the time, which is now my main PC. I am absolutely satisfied with it. I went for this processor rather than the slightly newer and slightly faster 3Ghz version because given this processor's reputation for successful overclocking, the difference in price couldn't justify the slight FSB increase you get with the faster chip. I now have this little beauty happily ticking along at 3.2Ghz with fan cooling and passing all stability tests. I have this CPU overclocked to 3.2GHz in a rig which includes an nVidia 8800 GPU and 4GB of 800Mhz RAM. The only downside to this processor is the slightly slower FSB in comparison with the 3GHz model which may deter some overclocking enthusiasts. No doubt, if you are considering buying one of these processors for a games machine, you are gripped by the multi-core dialemma. It is true that most games are not yet able to take full advantage of a dual core processor, much less a quad core such as this one! However, my rig runs every game I currently own at a comfortable framerate at maximum quality settings (and that includes the forests of Oblivion). I expect that when the next generation of games arrives, in terms of processor demands, multi-core processors will be fully exploited and that even if you are a hardcore gamer this processor will both satisfy you now and future-proof you for a few years to come.Read full review
