Der Intel Core i7-990X ist ein Mikroprozessor für Desktops aus der Intel Extreme Edition, der sich aufgrund seiner Leistungsfaktoren für anspruchsvolle PC-Anwendungen eignet. Er wurde für den Sockel FCLGA 1366 konstruiert. Dieser Intel Prozessor basiert auf der sogenannten Nehalem-Architektur. Für seine Herstellung wurde das 32-nm-Westmere-Verfahren gewählt. Mit insgesamt sechs Gulftown-Kernen, die in einem 0,032-µm-Prozess gefertigt wurden, sowie 12 Threads ist dieser Intel Prozessor fähig, komplexe Datensätze und Applikationen parallel sowie in kurzer Zeit abzuarbeiten. Unterstützt werden diese Eigenschaften durch die Hyper-Threading-Technologie, die Turbo-Boost-Technologie sowie die Funktionen MMX und SSE 1 - 4.2. Weiterhin wurde dieser Intel Hexa-Core Prozessor mit einer Takt-Frequenz von 3,46 GHz ausgestattet, die Turbo-Frequenz erreicht einen Wert von 3,73 GHz. Als Maß der Geschwindigkeit wurde die Intel QPI-Speed mit 6,4 GT/s angegeben. Der Speicher des Typs DDR3-1066 ist in Level 3 mit einer Kapazität von 12 MB versehen, für den L2-Cache wurden 6x256 KB berücksichtigt. Bei diesem Intel Prozessor konnte die maximale Verlustleistung bei 130 Watt gemessen werden. Mit den Technologien EIST, Idle States, Thermal Monitoring sowie Intel Demand Based Switching wurde dieser Intel Core i7-990X Processor Extreme Edition - 3,46 GHz Six Core (BX80613I7990X) Prozessor mit zahlreichen energieschonenden Instrumenten bedacht. Zum Schutz von Software und IT sind die Sicherungssysteme Execute Disable Bit und Intel Trusted Execution vorgesehen. Die Daten-Übertragung erfolgt bei diesem Hexa-Core Prozessor in 64-bit-Verschlüsselung.
