This movie has a few interesting points that could have been explored much more fully. The characters are unbelievable (you can't believe they would act like that). Quite an embarrassing film in parts. Don't watch it with your mum! I felt let down and short-changed by the experience. There are a lot of funny points made and the background always has something amusing, but the plot and the script let it down. Sorry, I wanted to like this film more. **

I decided i would buy this dvd because i had heard a lot about it but never seen it I really enjoyed most of it It is very funny in places but it did feel it had some bits where it seemed to drag on a little bit On the whole it was a very good dvd to watch
Pick it up or 99p from somebody round the corner. It was a bit od punt as nobody i knew had seen it yet. It turns out its quite funny, but its a bit of a weird concept to get your head round. A world without lying?
excellent film and an unusual story line

I have never been a fan of Ricky Gervais but, being open minded, decided to watch this film despite my dislike of the man and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This film is not what I would describe as a typical comedy - in fact I don't even consider it a funny film - but it is excellent nonetheless. Set in a world identical to our own in every respect bar one, in this world honesty is not a virtue, it is a fact of life - everyone tells the truth. Always! Until one day an ordinary man (Gervais) makes an unbelievable discovery, he is capable of saying things that "aren't", that "have never been" and people believe him anyway. Because truth is a given and it has always been thus no one has any real concept of what truth is so the opposite - a lie - is totally inconceivable to them. This is a deep and insightful work which touches on the fundamental nature of society and the belief systems that underpin it. The consequences of absolute truth are far reaching: crime does not exist, neither does religion and the world of advertising is simplicity itself - "Pepsi, For When You Can't Get A Coke!"... Without giving away some of the finer points of this fine work there were a couple of points where I was moved to tears: when Gervais tells the big lie to make his mother feel better and when he chooses to tell the truth although lying would get him what he desires more than anything else in the world simply because getting it that way would devalue it to the point of worthlessness. The soundtrack, which featured some excellent songs actually added to the ambience of the film rather than being intrusive, a little a cherry on the top of a glorious sundae. While I am not sure what fans of Gervais might think I found this to be a truly excellent film well worth watching again and eBay seems to reflect my views as the DVD is going for anywhere between £9 and £14 with one lucky sole catching a bargain at only £4.50. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I have and if Gervais is capable of such fine writing I might have to look out for more of his work in future. Regards tbodRead full review
