After serving Army in Europe during WW2, Three Army buddies decided to reunite after ten years and this is the unintended consequence of that separation. While this is an MGM musical with the usual happy ending, it's what's in between that showed the three Army buddies what pulled them apart and what was needed to bring them back together again. It's a shame two of the better dances made it to the cutting room floor, but at least you can see them in the outtakes. The one dance Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse did was to “Love is Just a Racket,” which had they just used the words and not the quick costume changes, would have fit perfectly and not slowed things down as was claimed. Dan Dailey, Michael Kidd and Gene Kelly did some amazing dances, especially in the beginning. Even if you've seen Cyd Charisse's dance with the boxers at Stillman's Gym, you may not have seen the lead in song, the Home of Broken Noses. Delores Gray had three songs, with one cut. She was another one who was under appreciated. The fight near the end was fun, but I don't know anybody who can get hit in the face that many times and remain standing. Only in Hollywood! As usual, Gene Kelly got to do his own stunts, much to the chagrin of of the studio execs.Read full review
