A second selection of articles by Jacques Dubois, following Histoire monastique en France au XIIe siecle . This considers the monks' place in medieval society, as seen by their contemporaries, then considers the respective importance of their work and prayers in the daily life of their communities. Two major studies on Mont Saint-Michel explore the priories and significance of the cult of relics and monastic treasures for the monks of the Middle Ages. Jacques Dubois, who died in 1991, spent almost 50 years as a Benedictine monk, and supervised the publication of seven volumes of the lives of the saints, writing nearly 3000 pages of it himself. He continued his research on other topics, and was honoured by the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres for his Subsidia hagriographica .
