Five features. 'Vertigo' is Alfred Hitchcock's haunting tale of deception, madness, and death a masterful exploration of fantasy and anxiety. The film ranks with REAR WINDOW as one of the director's most closely studied films for its psychological complexity, while the obsession of its protagonist John Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) can also be seen to parallel that of Hitchcock's own fascination with the icy-blonde leading lady he re-created at the centre of so many of his films. Ferguson is a retired detective, his career ended by the onset of a paralysing fear of heights. An old friend, the wealthy Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), hires Ferguson to follow his wife (Kim Novak), whom, he explains, has grown obsessed with an ancestor of hers. The assignment, however, draws Ferguson out of his comfortable role as observer and into a complex web of intrigue, mingled with the detective's own fantasies and fears. Stewart gives an exceptional performance as the disintegrating detective, while Novak, who was left largely undirected by Hitchcock, conveys a subtle and powerful psychological journey. Another star of the film is its San Francisco setting. VERTIGO is considered one of Hitchcock's most complex, finest films. Also includes 'Rear Window', 'Harvey', 'Winchester '73' and 'Destry Rides Again'.

Jimmy Rides Again
I have always been a fan of westerns, ever since my Grandfather back in the sixties sat me down one Sunday evening to watch one of the films in this box set. The Title was Destry Rides Again and has ever since been a favourite. When I saw this set on offer at last at a very reasonable price it was a must have. Three of the five films are in Black and White and evan though my own children look on in disbelief and think there is a problem with the disk it does not detract from the films. You just cant put down acting of this quality. The Stories are acceptable bearing in mind when they were made some may think they are not PC but heck they were made when PC was a police constable and meant little else. Sound is accepable and the picture quality is decent bearing in mind the age of some films The set consists of two Westerns both excellent stories and favourites anyway, two more are excellent Hitchcock Thrillers, while the last is a comedy about an alcoholic and a big invisable rabbit. The films in the set are , Winchester 73, Destry Rides Again, Vetigo, Rear Window and Harvey. James Stewart has to be one the best actors there has been, his roles range from the comedic through to private detective to rugged cowboy, an amazing talent. I can thoroughly recommend this set to anyone who is a fan of Jimmy Stewart as well as old good quality stories.Read full review
