The story without the necessary qualities of her narrative If you consider Jane Austen's novels summarily, and ignore the irony and the creation of character they might be considered to be merely romances after the school of Mills and Boon. Sadly to compress these novels within the scope of two CDs there is a danger that to rush on with the plot and neglect the wit, the wry commentary and the free discourse of the narrative they are eviscerated of all that make them 'great novels' However well read these studies of society and heroines may be rather more 'children's stories' [which is not to despise children's stories] but they loose their power and may be a turn off for those that come to Austen without having read the originals. I was disappointed, accordingly, with these recordings, none the less they are well read, and within the afore said limitations quite a pleasant way of wiling away time before sleep or because of insomnia. Brilliant price for a great boxset of top-notch narrations. The content is abridged, but for once I am not bothered as these are good abridgements with the essence of the novels not lost. And the narrators are wonderful.
