This is a great recording of the stage performance. The sound and picture quality is excellent. The show is not for everyone, but we found it hilarious and laughed out loud throughout. IT is a show that has to be viewed several times to catch all the in-jokes. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone with a broad mind and sense of humour

I love this! A clever, satirical, varied, challenging piece of theatre that ties together modern TV, ancient religion, human nature and puts all of humanity under the microscope by turning one of the most well known presenters of the last two decades into an Everyman figure. Richard Thomas's music will have musicians bursting into laughter in recognition of his parodies, while your family stares at you wondering what joke they missed as the style shifts like a runaway rollercoaster between Handel, Verdi, Wagner, Sondheim and so many others, while the clever interweaving of the characters and their stories will leave you fighting for breath between laughter. It's a disgrace to modern society that a bunch religious lunatics who've never watched it managed to shut down so many productions of this masterpiece, and a triumph that it was captured for posterity before they did. Thank you Richard and Stewart!Read full review

As far as bad taste musicals about the Devil, the Ku Klux Klan and bisexual love triangles go, Jerry Springer: The Opera is one of the best. A unique exaggeration of America's most notorious chat show, it follows the day to day goings on of Springer's show and the people who feature on it. The music and lyrics are witty, outrageous and certainly not for those easily offended: how could you expect anything less from an opera that received nearly 50,000 complaints before it aired on the BBC? Starring David Soul of Starsky and Hutch fame and David Bedella from Holby City and the recent UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show, the cast delivers an upbeat and emotional opera, challenging the attitudes of the American public, the Catholic Church and common decency! Features songs such as "I Just Wanna Dance" "Mama Give Me Smack On The A-hole" "Adam And Eve And Mary" You will not be disappointed with this dvd.Read full review
I purchased this DVD largely out of curiosity because I missed it when it was aired on TV. When it was aired it attracted a great deal on criticism and controversy because it broke new ground in televisual entertainment. I was a big fan of the TV series 'Starsky & Hutch' and of David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser, the principle actors in the title roles. I was therefore curious to see David Soul in an uncharacteristic operatic part for a change and one which was linked to the highly-popular, prime-time, daytime, TV host, Jerry Springer. whose programmes seemed to be populated by highly extrovert, deeply eccentric and positively weird people and I am not just thinking of the guests. The invited audience was pretty weird too. For me the best part of the whole programme was Jerry Springer's summary which I regard as classics in their own right. How could a popular and controversial American host and unique TV programme possibly be turned into an opera? This individualistic DVD provides the answer. This production is no Gilbert & Sullivan opera in which the objective is to entertain no matter what their age. This modern production contains gritty, adult themes and humour and watching it comes with a warning. For some, those with a nervous or sensitive disposition, the content of this DVD will likely offend. I suggest previewing it if it is to be shown to a younger audience.Read full review
i love this musical, it is notoriously naughty and is on the cusp of dangerously bad taste. it is a delight if you take it for what it is, which is a piss-take of the Jerry Springer show, not an attack on groups or individuals included in this musical. the musical is extremely well written and has a great cast, i do however find the singing voice of the large guy very annoying. the singng is fantastic generally. my favourite sections are the adverts, these are magically funny and naughty. overall this is an extremely entertaining, coarse and contemporary show, which may offend easilly. you have been warned.
