in 1972 island records recorded but didn't release these songs (Eventually released on a small label in '75)as it was decided not what music fans wanted to hear in the early 70s ( basically catchy singles ) .Joe Higgs had been in the music scene since the '60s ,coaching the young Bob Marley & Wailers & supplying backing vocals on their 73 US tour. This release sounds very much like a LP rather than a collection of singles, Higgs voice is not unlike Justin Hinds or the Maytals & most of the songs here are soulfull & skilfully arranged (think Jimmy Cliff 'Many rivers to cross'). There are shades of some of the classic US soul singers in these songs about lifes struggles & its rewards. The release on Pressure Sounds adds 2 tracks to the original lp. They also reissued his 'Unity is power' lp from '79 - a very good disc but possibly not up to this almost lost classic.Read full review
