Originally released simultaneously with the John Lennon Anthology, Wonsaponatime condenses a four-disc box set into a digestible single disc that feels more revelatory than its parent. That's because the compilers did an excellent job of selecting the highlights from the long-winded box, spotlighting the best alternate takes and unreleased songs. Wonsaponatime has a similar feel to Anthology, since it is culled from the same rough takes and studio rambling, but it's simply more accessible, letting less dedicated fans appreciate everything from the Cheap Trick-backed "I'm Losing You" and "God Save Oz," to alternates of "Working Class Hero," "God," "I Found Out," and "How Do You Sleep?" Again, these outtakes are not revelatory in the manner of Dylan's Bootleg Series, or even the Beatles' own Anthology, but they humanize Lennon, who has often been viewed as something of a saint in the years since his assassination. For that alone, Wonsaponatime is as welcome an addition to his catalog as the exhaustive Anthology.Read full review
This album has a great cross-section of mr.lennons work from simple old time rock and roll, through psychedelia to proper rocking out tunes, with a bit of live material thrown in for good measure. Some tracks on here that I've never heard anywhere else before - definitely not one to educate the younger kids about the Beatles and John Lennon's work though as there is some choice language in it, but a great one for the grown ups. Highly recommended not only to the faithful, but also to those who just fancy something a little bit different - some very contemporary material within - give it a whirl!
I have been looking for John Lennon cd's to download onto my ipod. I received this cd, and was disappointed immediately by the condition. Grubby to say the least. The cover looked as if grimy fingers had been all over it and I felt I needed rubber gloves to touch it!!. Worse still, inside, the cd itself was scratched, with two quite big scratches. I knew what was coming, and it did, the cd stuck on the third song, God, and will not play it. So annoying!!!! I think ebay must insist on the items on ebay being in correct condition. This is the sort of item you see in a bootfair for 50p not on ebay at a respectable price. Very disappointed.
