Joseph Arthur can be accused of being somewhat inconsistent, especially of late, releasing music that you could say sounded like a good idea at the time. For example, the raw rock of the album 'Let's Just Be' seems like nothing more than the conception of a night of drink and drugs, and although this has provided great albums for some great acts, 'Let's Just Be' is just a mess. 'Come To Where I'm From' is Joseph's second album, and one of his best and certain his darkest while still appealing to a more wide audience. There is an air of paranoia and confusion flowing through the album which is intoxicating. Starting with the gorgeous 'In The Sun', quite possibly one of the most moving songs of the last decade, and most likely many people's claim to finding Arthur, the gorgeous melody combined with the strong, touching lyrics, mark this as one of Arthur's best songs. However if you are purely searching for this album as something that contains 12 'In The Sun's', think again. This is a very varied album containing many influences and genres. The grungey 'Exhausted' is a driving song that Cobain himself could have written should he have decided to not be quite so vague with his lyrical powers, 'Tattoo' is Arthur at his most genuinely soulful, and would have fitted very well on his next album, the much more mainstream 'Redemption's Son', and as a complete contrast, the mumbling, ranting but strangely enthralling 'Creation Or a Stain' concretes Arthur reputation as an artist with more than just one trick up his sleeve. Subsequent albums found Arthur moving into a slightly more mainstream approach and then back to more darker territory again, while making music on his own label as well as the paintings that adorn his album artwork, but he was at his most artful and claustrophic right here. So the album being called 'Come To Where I'm From' his quite apt.Read full review
