Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman scandalised the world by falling in love while both married to others and setting up home together. The early 1950s are often referred to as Rossellini's 'Bergman' period and Journey to Italy is now regarded as one of his finest works. Catherine and Alexander, a wealthy and sophisticated couple on the verge of dissolution, drive to Naples to dispose of a deceased uncle's villa: will they find insight and direction in Italy?
Somewhat turgid 1954 drama about a bored married couple, whose relationship is coming apart at the seams, driving to Italy to sort out a late uncle's estate. The film had dreadful reviews when first released but is now recognised as a triumph for director Roberto Rossellini. The stars are Ingrid Bergman (with whom Rossellini had a scandalous love affair) and super-smoothe George Sanders. Co-stars are the superb Bentley in which the couple travel around and the ruins of Pompeii, which Ingrid's character finds overwhelming. Fans of Italy will love it.
