This is a great box set, and contains ALMOST everything of merit that the band did (and to be fair, most of what they did is beyond fantastic!); I was slightly disappointed that it didn't include the faster version of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (the b-side version), and intrigued by the fact that the unreleased material (the RCA sessions, Piccadilly Radio etc) was of the same quality as versions that I've had on bootleg vinyl over the years (which was great I should add) - wonder where that material was sourced from? Slightly annoying that not all tracks from those sessions were included; I guess it acts as a taster, but the remaining tracks are only available on bootleg LPs/CDs - surely we're not being encouraged to line the bootlegger's pocket?! It seems that there is still a lot of quality material floating about (Peter Hook's tape collection among other places), and for me there were some glaring omissions! Although they're by no means the best stuff, the Warsaw demo tracks from July '77 are historically important, and all part of the bigger picture in my opinion. Sames goes for the 'Short Circuit' track, 'At A Later Date': it should've ALL been on there! My last gripe is that, although the live CD is good, there is some much better live material around (Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Les Bains Douche all spring to mind)! Having said all that, it IS an essential collection and certainly does the band's justified reputation justice; nicely packaged too, although WHY that hideous pic of Ian on the front? There were FOUR members of the band, not just one, after all!!Read full review
Joy Division were streets ahead of the competition and way beyond their time, true futurists with a very deep New Wave Modish style. Joy Divsion went on to become New Order minus front man Ian Curtis. When you listen to Indie music today you will notice a piece of Joy Division living and breathing inside most. Joy Divison - Heart and Soul is a true collection of all their greats including Live perfomances. A must for all Mod, Indie, Soul and Doors fans. Garvan
A perfect nearly complete back catologue of Joy Division's excellent post punk unique style that influenced many bands of todays charts, ie Killers, Franz Ferdenand etc etc.
