This is the first book I have read by this cult author and it won't be the last! I pensively thought that this was going to be a difficult read, but the prose was expressive and illuminating and the words slipped smoothly into my mind. The book itself provided a great insight into the world of a heroin addict and the lives around it. It certainly didn't promote the use of this drug as something to aim for, but it was honest in actuality that this addiction is a way of life and not just recreational or simply fun. It is fascinating that little has changed with the gritty reality of heroin addiction compared to modern times and this book really illustrates that. The crimes commited in order to procure "a hit" and the police interventions are great timeless examples proving this book remains in the forefront when dealing with this subject. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief at the authors relentless striving for the drug, even when he so succintly describes how debilitating the result of its usage was. This reiterates the sheer power of addiction and Burroughs has described it matter of factly with tremendous skill. I gave it 4/5, rather than 5/5 because I felt the book lacked a little when it came to expressing why the actual drug is appealing in the first place or even something that people want to do. This, perhaps sways a prohibitionist to recommend this book to a young audience to keep them away from this merciless and life wrenching drug. Well worth a read to enlighten the masses to that way of life!Read full review
I've read the book before, and let a friend borrow it. Lost that copy and needed another copy. Good price, good quality and delivered with haste.
