Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Save on Speakers & Subwoofers
A good value, basic subwoofer but suffering from one or two design problems. Like the other Kef PSW models, you must always switch off the power when not in use. The Auto/Manual function is only a loudspeaker mute and does not save any power. Even if you buy one of these as working, it WILL fail. They all suffer the same fault which can be fixed for just a few pounds. However Kef (UK) will charge you £120 for this repair and the fault WILL occur again. Edit - Another review implies that a "batch" of these were prone to become faulty. I reiterate: Every single one made WILL fail with the same faults. This series of subs need a few very simple modifications to prevent re-occurrence of the faults.

First off, I'm no tech-head. I was just after a powerful sub-woofer which had a broad range of bass frequencies. I did a load of research on the usual suspects of named electronics providers such as Sony, Kenwood and the like before stumbling quite accidentally on KEF systems. The more I read about these KEF systems and their seemingly under-rated feedback the more I realised that this system was exactly what I was looking for. Since I purchased this sub-woofer I can honestly say that I have never owned such a powerful yet discrete system. The unit sits like a piece of pseudo-modern art in my living room coming in a non-offensive charcoal grey colour casing, the glass top is inspired and adds a hint is design haute couture. On powering on the unit for the first time and setting the frequency range the KEF it sat unobtrusively waiting for an input to work its way into its circuitry, and when it did.... oh mamma... didn't it let me know it! I made the mistake of having the output volume of my amplifier (Denon AVR-3802) to the subwoofer cranked way up. The resulting wall of pure, heart stopping, throbbing bass that shot out of the KEF was astounding with not a hint of distortion over all frequencies. I dared not turn the volume up any further on my amplifier for fear of causing serious structural damage to my home, while the KEF barely even broke into a sweat. After a little fiddling about with the settings on the KEF and some much needed balancing from my amplifier, the KEF out performs any and every other subwoofer I have ever owned. After balancing, The sound produced is subtle when it needs to be and striking when it really matters. It's difficult to describe but now that I have set the system correctly the sound experience is so subtly integrated, especially as part of my 7.1 surround sound system, it's well... sublime. It can handle music, film soundtrack and the spoken word with a a crisp, rumble and distortion free clarity which needs to be heard to be believed. Admittedly, the system which I have is not a standard 2000 system. Mine has been upgraded to the 2010 amplifier unit (250 watts) crammed into the 2000 casing. But the 10" downward facing speaker sitting approximately 5cm off of my hardwood flooring provides truly awesome sound. Downsides, there are only a couple in my opinion. Firstly, I understand that the reliability of the KEF system may be questionable (knowledge gleaned through research about the subwoofer) but so far this has not been an issue for me. Secondly, the size of the unit itself. It'll probably look a little out of place in a smaller room as its not exactly small but, in a medium to large sized room you'll barely notice that it's there... other than the heeeeeeeuuuuuuge bass soundtrack that it kicks out of course.Read full review
I purchased this sub woofer despite concerns over it's reputation for poor reliability and I'm glad I did, the sound quality is absolutely brilliant, I have a much more expensive BH platinum sub on my main system and the KEF although not quite a good is not far behind. The reliability is a concern as these sub woofers are known for over heating, the one I purchased is meant to have had a complete overhaul with the parts causing the over heating issue being replaced for better quality components. From a sound quality perspective this sub is going to hard to beat especially considering it now retails for less than £100.
