The 120 volt smoke detector in our home created a short, and went off at 2:30 am in the morning. I had to cover it with masking tape to stop it, then I removed it. I replaced it with this Kidde Model smoke detector. The only modification I had to make, was to drill 1 hole in the mounting plate to match the electrical box threaded holes, and it fit perfect, covering the electrical 120 volt box. Photos attached.

My husband carefully tested these detectors with a small amount of smoke from a burning newspaper and both detectors responded with a very loud beeping, although we were surprised at how much smoke was required. Do not test your smoke detectors by simply pressing the button, that will only tell you if the installed battery is good. Doing that will not tell you if the smoke detection is sensitive enough to save your life in a fire.
