I loved all of China Mieville's previous works and have always been utterly absorbed into the story instantly, even so far as reading in the bus or train even if I end up with a great big headache. however, I find Kraken less absorbing than I had hoped. I find it hard to relate to the characters and have little sympathy or feeling for them. I was deeply moved and in tears sometimes when i read Perdido Street Station and Iron Council, and gripped by City and the City.Kraken just feels oddly cold and disconnected, in my opinion. His London is very familiar, maybe too familiar. It did not have the great energy and fantastic landscape of his other worlds. even the London of King Rat has far more gothic charm and interest to me than Kraken's London. This book feels a bit of an anticlimax. But to be fair, China's previous works have been absolutely fantastic anything even slightly less would suffer in comparison. I still found it a satisfying read, but not an absolutely great one. I still love Mieville though, and look forward eagerly to more of his books.Read full review
