This film is based on a fairytale of the old school, meaning that sweetness and light it ain't: the original story is based on a disturbing enough premise (a childless couple project their need onto a vaguely child-shaped tree root, which comes to life and devours all and sundry) and Svankmayer's contmporary adaptation does the old tale proud. Of course, 'darkness' is de rigeur these days; Svankmeyer, however, has a defter touch than most filmmakers and this outshines other not-for-the-kids dark fairytales such as Pan's Labyrinth. The performances are wonderful, the faithfulness to the spirit of old storytelling is something to be admired, and the special effects - largely stop-motion - achive a spine-tingling impact that cgi can rarely approach. Despite its darkness the film never gets turgid or heavy: in the best traditions of Czech cinema it is blackly funny throughout. Not one for the youngsters, but definitely worth watching. For much the same market as Pan's Labyrinth but less glossy and considerably better.Read full review
A wonderfully funny and witty film from the Czech Republic. The main character-Otik, must rank as one of the screens all time memorable characters. If you like european folktales then seek this out, you will not be disappointed! The DVD print is excellent. I bought this for Christmas but watched it straight away as the film simply 'sucks you in'.
