There is a full introduction and background analysis of Jane's life and how she thought at the time she wrote each of these stories. I suggest reading the stories first and then the intro so that there is no spoiler. Lady Susan was written very early in her career and reveals a very manipulative character. The Watsons showed how people's lives were affected by their material means and class and it wasn't really finished but the progress of the story could be guessed at - unlike Sanditon, which was started at the end of her life and shows her awareness of time moving on a new ideas coming in, but it is not clear where the story would go. She only wrote the first 11 chapters introducing the characters and the place setting and these are covered in the first TV episode alone and the remaining episodes are fanciful unsubtle titilation for TV and have nothing to do with Austen's writing. Miss Lambe is a mulatto and is merely mentioned in the book but she has not arrived in Sanditon - so no boyfriend and no guardian. Sidney is supposed to be witty and Charlotte uninteresting. The lewd sexual content, relations between Edward and his step sister, a doctor with a shower and Sidney appearing naked are definitely not in Austen's unfinished book. While naked male bathing was common place in the period Austen would have made no reference to it. It was interesting to read what Austen actually did write.Read full review

It's a book, so it's fine. But it's a lot older and rattier than the one I thought I'd ordered. It isn't the one shown in the picture.
