Michael Pitt's Blake is Kurt Cobain. There, said it. The icon doesn't merely 'inspire' so much as haunt every narcotic-slurred stumbling, mumbling, pissing, jamming, OD-ing and macaroni'n'cheese-making frame. "It's a very personal portrait of an artist in crisis," says producer Dany Wolf and, from the look to the music to the death, Gus Van Sant's film is the perfect tribute to the Nirvana frontman. All the while surrounded by vicarious hangers-on, talking to him about groupie sex while he's writing about "the long journey from death to birth", Blake's decline is a lonely, miserable one. Monumentally uneventful at times (there is, thankfully, no commentary: "Here's Blake in the woods... Still there... Still woody... Autumn is a super season, isn't it?"), it's to Pitt's credit that we sympathise for his character's 'rock'n'roll cliché' woes. A Pitt-fall though is the inclusion of a video by the actor's band, Pagoda, which makes him seem like the less-talented hanger-on he says he wanted to avoid becoming in his DVD-exclusive interview. Meanwhile, in a decent Making Of, the general consensus is how liberating the whole scriptless thing was. "It's not a movie, more an art piece," babbles Lukas Haas. The film's absolutely not for everyone - some will leave, most will snooze - but if you're ready for Last Days, it won't make you want to be a rock star, it'll just mesmerise you into feeling like one. And if you don't get it, well, Nevermind.Read full review
I decided to buy this because it was linked to the story of Kurt Cobain's last days. It is actually fairly accurate and representative to what apparently happened. The actor playing Cobain is good but doesn't have that edge that made Cobain so appealing. All in all a good film, though is really slow paced which although represents the depression and dismay Cobain felt for his world, may be too slow paced and perhaps a little boring for some people.
This film is great it gets u to the story of what might of happened with kurt cobain. You watch it and you could imagne kurt doing things like blake in the movie it's a wonderfully shot film,it dosen't really explain much but if u know the story of kurt and the 'last days' of his life then you'll know what is unfolding. It is a great film.
There is the distinct impression that when making this film, Gus van Sant was aiming to produce a film that is not pleasurable to watch. This being said it is an interesting look at the final days of a mind collapsing in upon itself. Although it does not shed any definite light upon the final days of Kurt Cobain's life it does provide an interesting glimpse as to what they may have been like. Thought-provoking rather than informative material. Overall this film is something of a disappointment when compared with 'Elephant', however it is not without it's points of interest. Not a saturday nighter and probably best watched without company and with a moderate degree of patience.
Crazy would best sum this title up but it is very believable and the main character looks just like Kurt. There is not much talking in this so don't expect great dialogue. If you are a fan of Kurt then you need to own this film.
